A great
intellectual and acknowledged director of musical events, Alfredo
Aracil is one of the most important figures in Spanish music
from the generation of the 50s. His compositions, of undeniable
mastery, possess great sensitivity, elegance, and subtlety,
and are destined to endure long after current trends and fashions.
Born in Madrid in 1954, he
studied music in that city under S. Gómez Tejeda, T.
Marco, C. Bernaola, C. Halffter, L. de Pablo and A. Tamayo,
and in Darmstadt under K. Stokhausen, I. Xenakis, C. Wolf and
M. Kagel.
He received scholarships for the Internationales Musikinstitut
in Darmstadt and the Juan March Foundation, among other institutions.
He holds a doctorate in the History of Art, a field to which
he has dedicated a large part of his activities. His publications
include El siglo XX, entre la muerte del arte y el arte moderno
(The 20th century, between the death of art and modern art),
with Delfín Rodríguez (Istmo, 1982; 3rd printing
1998), and Juego y artificio. Autómatas y otras ficciones
del Manierismo a la Ilustración (Games and Tricks. Automatons
and other fictions of Mannerism in Illustration) (Cátedra,
1998).
Since 1977 he has worked for the RNE (Spanish National Radio)
music services, where he has been Head of the Music Productions
Department at Radio 2 and a member of the Euroradio Group of
Classical Music Experts (UER). He also took part in the organisation
of cultural programmes for the "Madrid European Capital
of Culture 1992" consortium and for the Cervantes Institute
in Paris in 1993. From 1994 to 2001 he was director of the Granada
International Festival of Music and Dance. He is currently a
member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Musicology
(SEdeM), President of the Spanish Branch of the International
Society for Contemporary Music (SIMC), and an associate professor
at the Autonomous University of Madrid.
His compositions have been included in concert seasons and festivals
such as the Internationales Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Holland),

Musicale Senese (Italy), the Festival d'Eté in Geneva
(Switzerland), the Midem Classique in Cannes, Musica 87 in Strasbourg
and the Festival of Saintes (France), the Biennale Zagreb (Yugoslavia,
now Croatia), the Almeida Festival in London (United Kingdom),
the New York Festival of the Arts (USA) and, in Spain, the Festival
Internacional de Música y Danza in Granada, the Festival
de Música de Canarias, the Quincena Musical in San Sebastián,
the Festival Internacional de Música Contemporánea
in Alicante, the Festival Internacional in Barcelona, the Festival
de Otoño in Madrid, the Ensems of Valencia, the Semana
de Música Religiosa in Cuenca and the Festival de Teatro
Clásico in Almagro, among others.
His works have been performed by the National Orchestra and
Choir of Spain, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, the Minsk Philharmonic
Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Buenos Aires,
the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, the Galicia Symphony Orchestra,
the Grand Canary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tenerife Symphony
Orchestra, the City of Granada Orchestra, the Orchestra and
Choir of the Comunidad of Madrid, the Arnold Schoenberg
Choir, the Choir of the Generalitat of Valencia, the
