As has always been the case, Discord invites War to
walk together in unison

|
Discord and War contemplate the conversion of King
Clodoveo to Christian law. The king tells the story of what took place
when he was baptized: the flask fell from the Bishop's hand as he was
about to anoint the king with the Sovereign Oil
|
||
| Scene 3 | ||
|
Musical scene. An Angel and a dove come down from Heaven.
The Angel carries three irises, symbol of the French crown and the dove
carries a new flask in its beak. The King is baptized
|
||
| Scene 4 | ||
|
Discord leads war to a new vision: the stormy night
through which King Rodolpho accompanies a priest who carries the Blessed
Sacrament through the torrential downpour. Rodolfo recounts how, when
they were lost in the darkness, the sun lit up the path to show them the
way
|
||
| Scene 5 | ||
|
Musical scene. Peace comes down as dawn breaks with
a bunch of white lilies (the coat of arms of the house of Habsburg). Rodolfo
embraces the catholic faith
|
||
| Scene 6 | ||
|
Discord reveals to War his desire to prevent Peace
between the Christian and catholic monarchs, symbols of the union between
the Spanish and French kingdoms
|
||
| Scene 7 | ||
|
Discord's monologue in which he recounts his vile actions
throughout history. From Cain to the Jews in the time of Christ he has
always sowed discord
|
||
| Scene 8 | ||
|
Leisure appears, with grace followed by the Secular
Branch. He threatens Discord with baptism. War decides to collaborate
with Discord
|
||
| Scene 9 | ||
|
The Ecclesiastical Branch appears and Discord asks
him for arms
|
||
| Scene 10 | ||
|
Discord brings about the fall of Peace
|
||
| Scene 11 | ||
|
Peace finds the support and companionship of Leisure
|
||
| Scene 12 | ||
|
Justice arrives to join with Peace
|
||
| Scene 13 | ||
|
The Spouse appears (an allegory of the Infanta Maria
Teresa), disposed to embrace Peace. The King of the Law of Grace, her
father intervenes, knowing that Peace is fleeing
|

| Scene 14 | ||
|
Peace leaves, accompanied by Leisure
|
||
| Scene 15 | ||
|
The King of Natural Law is lost in contemplation of
a portrait of a stranger who awakes his love. Peace shakes him from his
ignorance by telling him that the portrait is of the Spouse (Maria Teresa).
The two of them describe the Infanta's beauty and grace. But the King
does not acknowledge Peace
|

|
Peace tells Leisure of his desire to triumph and to
not give in
|
||
| Scene 17 | ||
|
War and Discord return and talk of their fear of Peace
and of how to trick her - to separate her from the king
|
||
| Scene 18 | ||
|
Musical scene. Peace implores both camps, that of Natural
Law and that of the Law of Grace to respond to her. Both of them do so
|
||
| Scene 19 | ||
|
Discord and War see their plans in tatters
|
||
| Scene 20 | ||
|
The Spanish King, together with the Ecclesiastical
Branch and the French monarch, together with the Secular Branch, accept
Peace
|
||
| Scene 21 | ||
|
War and Discord try their last ruses with the Ecclesiastical
Branch and the Secular Branch but are ignored
|
||
| Scene 22 | ||
|
Peace, victorious, receives the embrace of both sides
(Ecclesiastical and Secular) and in this way the union of Grace and Nature
is brought about, with the Iris and the White Lily of the kingdoms of
France and Spain
|
||
| Scene 23 | ||
|
Discord and War, not knowing how their defeat came
about, question Leisure, blaming him for their misfortune. Leisure, unhappy
about being left by Peace reveals that Peace had a meeting with the two
sides
|
||
| Scene 24 | ||
|
Musical scene. Fame proclaims the union of the two
kingdoms
|
||
| Scene 25 | ||
|
Discord and War relate how the two kings departed in
their respective ships and went to the place where Peace would be sealed
(the Treaty of the Pyrenees)
|
||
| Scene 26 | ||
|
Everyone celebrates the union in the Palace; the Spanish
King descends from the ship with Maria Teresa as does the French King
with his mother (Grace). Everything ends with the rendition of War at
the feet of the monarchs and the final triumph of Peace
|
||
